The Staff of Pudsey Computers are raising money for the Rob Burrows centre and helping the environment at the same time.
Manager Dave Laycock, 42, explains: “This is a cause close to my heart. My uncle had MND and one of the worst things was how he lost his voice.”
“Every phone, computer and tablet has valuable gold and other rare metals inside. We take everything apart and sell it on.”.
All of the money is being used to buy specialist tablets for the new £3million Rob Burrows MND centre in North Leeds. Dave has pledged to double the amount raised from his own pocket.
“Rob Burrows story is just one of many. I want to help give those people their voices again”.
His colleague Stuart Smith, 38, explains how the technology has changed: “By taking a recording of a person’s voice we can make a computer version of it that sounds just like them.”
Stuart has been helping to train MND support workers how to use this voice software in his spare time.
“Things are much easier to use now too, the user can choose what they want to say using just their eyes” he says.
Anyone wishing to help can drop off any unwanted devices directly to Pudsey Computers on Richardshaw Lane in Pudsey.
Dave says “We’re not fussy how old or broken the equipment is, that old Nokia in the cupboard can still help somebody less fortunate. Every part that can be recycled is being, so you’ll be helping the environment too”.
