What, more Kosmische Musik? Yet another Krautrock style track? more motorik beats? Well yes, but this one has a purpose. It’s intended as the backing track for my ‘What is Krautrock?’ primer, don’t want to get bitten for copyright if I ever make money. I’ve written up the main thesis here. I’ll be converting this to a video. Expanding on things (the blog posts are being edited too).
Instead of rigidly defining it I instead tried to trace around some of the historical context and give an idea of what German Rock was in the 70s in a wider sense. I’ve followed it up with the first part of what I think are the best Krautrock albums.
This is all intended to give a listener friendly introduction to the genre. I struggled at first.
My first Kraut album was CAN. Good start⁹ until you factor in that it was Rite Time, their awful 1989 reunion album. It was only 99p.
Then, for £3.99 i bought ‘Flow Motion’. Also not a great CAN album but getting better. Around the same time I rented ‘The Faust Tapes’ from the library. It both intrigued and scared me. Richard Branson paid for that?
It was only when I by chance heard ‘Mother Sky’ that everything clicked into place for me. Here was a groove I could get behind. And i haven’t looked back since. There’s a Spotify playlist on the blog, in chronological order, for those of you who use that. Youtube links too.
